The amount of time and expense finding your matching color is admirable and glad this info is still availabe. Tried it at home…and it was off. Sounds like I should have been matched with an NC25! Thanks for your blog! Great article. I, too, am very neutral. I have had people give me ridiculous make up, saying it looked great and was a match, only to go home and, uh, no, lol.

Perhaps the lighting in those places are a large part of the blame, though. Even a minimally trained cosmetic counter girl cant be that blind. Like you, ive come to realize that I can pick which type of look I want to go with. What was once a pain is actually quite fun. To beable to switch between warm and cool toned foundation is awesome. This post is very helpful, I love it! I, too, am half-japanese and was matched to a very yellow-toned NC mac foundation.
Hi, o this was such a relief to read. My question for you: Or did you just have to invest yourself?
NC vs. NW?
This is an old post but I wanted to thank you for sharing! Well, I am still not completely convinced, even though your review was very good. I have light, neutral skin and I am not able to find a match. Usually I can go with the lightest shade in any foundation, but now I am really lost.
For example, I wear 01 in Dior Nude Serum… can you help me a little bit, please?

I know this post is like 4 years old but I give it a try lol…. A bit late to the party, but thanks so much for this post! Double Wear in Ivory Nude is a great match for me but the formula is really drying on my lizard lobster skin. Armani Designer Shaping Cream in 2 is also a nice match, a tad too warm but more forgiving as it has less coverage. The search continues. Again, thanks for the great read and the resources! Neutral-cool skin tones really seem to throw makeup artists off for some reason!
Thanks again! Thank you for your helpful post! I did try to use the Sephora Color IQ match system online version and I have to be honest, it was way off. In Lancome, where their shades in the majority of their foundations begin at , I can only wear 2 of their foundation products that happen to come in shade She was surprised at the online result too. Your post was so helpful and the swatches you showed really reveals the different tone options, and how the shade can look good in a bottle but once it is on the skin, you can see the difference.
Thank you for your post!! From the MAC website: So all those NWs and NCs are [to some extent] misnomers and we should be looking for the right shade unbiased, going outside of the shopping centre in the daylight to have a look in a pocket mirror, bringing a friend and trying our best! Your experience is really helpful. Your skin is beautiful without foundation!
Thanks a million! Thank you for your article and review! Like you, I am half-Asian half-Taiwanese, half-Caucasian. It has always been a struggle finding the right makeup for my skin tone. Often it turns out too orange, too pink or way too pale and washed out. Fair-medium neutral shades seem to work best. I followed your recommendation to try Findation. All recommended by beauty blogs. Did you ever try Shiseido since you are half Japanese? A Shiseido rep was helping me to try and color match GA about my 7th different color match through 3 different stores and then I tried the shiseido one to amuse her, but it worked on the first try!
Now I fully understand.

God bless you. Ugh- yes! I am still on the hunt. I was also originally matched to NW20 in Mineralize Moisture, but I find it looks a hair dark and a little grey on me. I think I might also really be nc They seem to be so often wrong. I think my undertone is hard to assess. Is fair olive a thing? Why is it so difficult?!

MAC NW or NC ? Six beginners questions about MAC skin shades
Remember me. Facebook VKontakte Google. Previous Share Next. NC vs. Last Christmas my mom had bought me my first MAC foundation. Of course, being as pale as I am, I was the lightest shade - I'm sure I've got yellow undertones.
Can anyone tell me if I've been matched right or wrong? NW Neutral Warm is meant for cooler skin tones to neutralize them. NC Neutral Cool is meant for Warmer skin tones to neutralize them. Thanks for that Rachel. I always used get matched wrong at mac stores when I used to let them match me it's so annoying in future just take your time and match yourself.
About 2 yr ago I was Matched in face and body with c5 when in actuality I'm a c2 that's three shades lighter it's crazy, even back in the day they matched me nw25 studio sculpt concealer which I didn't realise for ages was to dark for me I matche myself with nw15 lol. Moral of the story is match yourself or take a friend with you who will be courageous enough to critique when your being matched up!!
That's great advice miiso thanks. I've been using the studio fix foundation and powder for a few months now not together and although it's good coverage, it just doesn't look quite right but couldn't put my finger on it. My neck is lighter than my face which I found out later is the case with a lot of people.
I went back and got color matched again and got a match. I'm glad I did as MAC appears to be the universal shade chart. Rachel you are so right. When you're first getting into the whole makeup thing anyone would just take whatever shade was recommended. MAC Is backwards with this! You would think if you're warm you should do an NW but it's the opposite! I got an NW foundation and my entire face looked pink. The lightening in those department stores is very deceiving. It actually makes it a lot harder to get a true match.
Keep that in mind next time your getting color matched and ask them for a mirror and walk around the department store till youre able to find the best natural light. I'll defo switch to the nc then. It's slightly annoying though as mac make up isn't cheap! Hi Kerry! It sounds to me like you are experiencing oxidizing foundation;p When a foundation oxidizes, it becomes darker and often more orange.
This happens when the oils from your skin mix with the product and come in contact with the air. This explains why you are experiencing a different color on your neck, as we have more oil glands on our faces. You could also try a primer, or a slightly lighter shade of foundation if you know it's going to darken.
It sounds crazy, but it's the best way to compare after you've worn them for an hour or two and you can see clearly which brand or shade is best! Awesome info, Jacqueline, following this!
